Institute of Medical Sciences, Guidelines Governing Direct Transfers from the MSc to Ph.D. Program

Admission Requirements:
In accordance with TCU policies, a master’s student who has a superior academic record at the graduate level, and presents outstanding research potential is eligible to apply for the direct Ph.D. track.

Materials Required for Applications:
1. A completed application form (https://academic.tcu.edu.tw/?page_id=806).
2. An autobiography (including the motivation; 3 copies)
3. At least two letters of recommendation, which must from academic sources.
4. A study plan for Ph.D. program (3 copies).
5. A transcript show grades (including class ranking) for every semester of study in which you were enrolled at that institution (including the first semester of 112 academic year) (please hand in the transcript before January 31, 2024).

The Examination Committee of the Institute will assess applicants based on their application materials and the oral interview. Upon approval by the Institute, the screening results will be forwarded to the president of TCU for affirmation. Applicants who are accepted will officially become doctoral students of the Institute.

PhD Qualifying Examination in 111-1 semester

According to the rules from our institute, the PhD Qualifying Examination should be completed before the end of third academic year after enrollment, and students should complete the application process within one month at the beginning of every semester (before 10/14 in this semester) .

The process flowchart:

Choose your adviser professor and constitute the thesis advisory committee.

Submit a completed application form(Choose between the main thesis or Non Thesis),
non-thesis: two non-thesis topics along with the main research project (all with abstracts)
main thesis:research project (abstract), (the research subject and direction are changed after QE, a new application must be submitted; Those who fail must change their research project and take the QE again)

The institute director and deputy directors will decide a topic for your non-thesis proposal, and also recommend one full-time tenured faculty from the Institute of Medical Sciences as your Qualifying Examination Committee member.

Your thesis advisory committee recommends two to four members for your Qualifying Examination Committee (at least one third of the members should be the external member of the Tzu Chi University).

Confirm the date for your Qualifying Examination.

Submit your non-thesis proposal two weeks before the Qualifying Examination (an electronic copy and 3 printed copies).

【重要通知】論文指導教授認定_Adviser Professor

Graduate students should choose main thesis adviser before the end of the first academic year. Student should be aware of the main advisor’s expertise, interested areas and available resources in order to achieve his (her) research goal. The identification of the adviser shall be based on the principle of full-time teachers of the Institute and those who are jointly employed as associate professors or above in the current year. If necessary, graduate student can invite a co-adviser upon the agreement from the deputy director and adviser professor.
